Our Picks for NYE 2017 in Los Angeles!

by Tom Nguyen

When I’m considering where to spend New Year’s Eve in Los Angeles, I look for 3 things:

  • Great live bands and dance music we typically cover on this site.
  • It won’t break the bank (Some free, most under $30).
  • Whether big or small events, I’m looking for good vibes, not pretentiousness.

If you’re looking for the same, here are my recommendations (in order of cost):

Grand Park + The Music Center’s #NYELA
Grand Park and Music Center (Downtown)
8pm-1am, Free, All Ages
LA’s answer to NYC’s Time Square: a central location, easily accessible by metro and all ages and free, with an eclectic mix of music for everyone! It’s an alcohol free event (thank you! no obnoxious drunks to ruin the vibe). Grank Park and The Music Center partner to make this year the largest event yet with 3 stages and of course its iconic midnight video projection! I’m a huge fan of Jungle Fire, QVLN, Afrodyete and DJs Jose Marquez, Gazoo Olmeda, DJ Expo!

SAZÓN NYE: Funky Brewsterz + La Junta
Cana Rum Bar (Downtown)
9pm-2am, Free, 21+
The Funky Brewsterz host SAZÓN at the Caña Rum Bar every Saturday to bring you the finest ingredients from Cumbia, Salsa, Latin Funk, World Music, Originals/Remixes and more. They’re joined by La Junta for a special NYE edition. Doors at 8pm; Music at 9pm. Free to members. Non-members: say you’re with The Funky Brewsterz or La Junta deejays for free entry. Table Reservations, email [email protected] EARLY ARRIVAL STRONGLY ENCOURAGED.

The Lost Knight New Year’s Eve Party Featuring Soul Scratch
The Lost Knight (Echo Park)

7pm-2am, Free before 9pm-$20, 21+
The Lost Knight
features Funk/Soul band Soul Scratch on the main stage playing 3 sets at 9:45pm, 10:45pm, 11:50 midnight countdown, DJs in between, 3 bars, rooftop patio and craft kitchen.

Funky Sole NYE with Breakestra

9pm-2am, $5-10, 21+
LA’s Finest Weekly Raw Funky Soul Party presents a live performance by Breakestra, Funky Sole DJs Music Man Miles & Clifton, DJ Mean Mister Mustard, DJ Joey Altruda.

Uptown Saturday Night: NYE 2017

Two rooms of FUNK, SOUL, HIP HOP, AND MORE, lovingly spun by: DJ Jedi, Anthony Valadez (KCRW), Def Sound. Complimentary Midnight Champagne Toast & Party Favors, Photobooth.

New Year’s Eve 2017: All Hands On Deck

Downtown location TBA
9pm-3am, $20-25, 21+
Late Night Laggers x Hands Down present a 2-room boat party celebration with a mix of Bass, Club, Hip-Hop and Global Beats!

NYE 2017 with: Dengue Fever and special guest
Alex’s Bar (Long Beach)

8pm-2am, $22, 21+
Long Beach’s Cambodian psychedelic band Dengue Fever and a special guest to be announced will play an intimate NYE concert at Alex’s Bar.

Brazilian NYE
Sofitel Hotel (Beverly Hills)
10pm-2am, $25 presale only, 21+
If you’re looking for a Brazilian celebration complete with midnight Rio Carnaval parade and live music and dance performances by many of the LA Brazilian community, head to Ariel Del Mundo‘s yearly event. And wear white: it’s a Brazilian tradition to welcome the new year.

Mariachelada
Don Chente Bar Grill & Fuego Rooftop Lounge (Downtown)
8pm-2:30am, $30, 21+
Antonio Pelayo, who organizes the annual Tatuaje and El Velorio events, teams up with a host of others to bring you an eclectic NYE with 2 levels of dancing: Main floor with live performance by El Conjunto Nuevo Ola and DJs spinning Open Format, Top 40, Hip Hop, Latin Vibe and rooftop floor with DJs spinning Alternative, 80’s and Flashbacks.

New Year’s Eve @ Downtown Long Beach
$40-50, All Ages
Not to be overshadowed by downtown LA’s many happenings, downtown Long Beach drew over 12,000 people last NYE! This year’s block party features Citizen Cope, Cut Copy with a DJ set, electro-dance master Big Data, reggae songstress Hirie, house DJ Plastic Plates, Latin soul group Boogaloo Assassins & more.

La Sonora Dinamita
Conga Room (Downtown)
$45-$200, 21+
Last year’s NYE, Conga Room hosted the original La Sonora Dinamita who hadn’t played LA in 10 years. It’s an interesting history how the legendary Colombian cumbia band fractured into so many incarnations playing abroad and here in LA. The one and only, the original La Sonora Dinamita returns again this NYE.
